Week 20 - It's looking a lot more finished!!

This week a lot of cleanup happened which really makes it look a lot closer to being finished. Tuesday I met with the contractor to go over a few things - review the paint color locations and just generally check things. Here are some pictures from that day of our new cabinets. The west wall of the kitchen. The cabinets look so great! the main kitchen. Right in the middle is where the sink will be, which is pretty much where it was. This is where my new gas cooktop will go. I still can't over how much great natural light we are going to have. I went over yesterday (Saturday) to meet with the contractor go over a few things and took some more pictures. We still don't have power, which is really getting to be a big issue. Back in late November the contractor informed me that Dominion, the power company, said that we needed a waiver from the city to keep our electrical service above ground as, there's a city ordinance that requires all new electric...

Week 10 - More Masonry and Framing

I can't believe that we've been under construction for 10 weeks now! The whole schedule is only 19 weeks so we've hit the 1/2 way mark. This week was finishing up the masonry on the addition, starting the masonry for the garden walls, and some interior framing work, namely the stairs. I think that the brick is the most labor-intensive part. When I went by on Friday, there were 6 guys there laying brick! The side walls of the addition are done. I think that they are waiting for the windows to do the piers on the north facade. From Friday, laying the brick for the east garden wall. Week 24 - It's the little things

Week 24: February 25 - March 1 This week was all about the little things...and the backyard. We decided to do a change order to get the backyard done because we figured it made sense to do it now, rather than leave it a big, muddy mess to deal with later, and my contractor gave us a good price (I consulted with others who have done similar work, including a contractor friend). The pictures in this post are all from Thursday, 2/28, but from both the morning, when I went over to meet with the contractor, and in the evening, when I went back to see the progress. You can easily tell the difference in the lighting. I have mixed them together so that the photos are grouped by location. Let's start with the backyard. This was started on Tuesday and by Thursday morning they had already removed the soil, put down the rough gravel, the filter paper, and the smaller gravel. This area will be the planting bed.
