A slab and more foundations!

This week, the basement slab was poured, some plumbing work done related to it, and the foundations for the brick walls on the sides laid.

Here are some pictures my contractor sent me on Friday morning.

I took some more pictures this morning. Here's the basement slab looking from the existing dining room. You'll notice a sump pit there in the middle....Change order #2...we thought that we could just connect into existing foundation drains but alas there weren't any there. We also never had a sump but because we had very little earth next to our house, we never had the need before. Definitely worth the cost now to prevent any damage. Because we have overhead electricity and we know that our block is the last to get power back in the neighborhood, we opted for the battery backup just in case.






Notice that functional drain in the middle? The plumber cut that yesterday, just in time for the rain we had yesterday, last night, and this morning. Phew!


I love seeing the ghost of the staircase that was there.
Next week, framing of the addition and the kitchen. Friday I meet with the cabinet guy to take final measurements so that they can be ordered. It still feels a little surreal that this actually happening and that by February we will have our new house!

This week I ordered the skylights (40% professional discount, baby!) and the tile. The next big things I have to get are the appliances (cooktop, wall oven microwave, washer, dryer) and the decorative light fixtures.

Things should actually progress a lot faster now that the concrete work is done. I'm going to have to start stopping by in the morning before work because after next week and the time change, it will be dark when I get home.

I can't believe that we've been under construction for 10 weeks now! The whole schedule is only 19 weeks so we've hit the 1/2 way mark. This week was finishing up the masonry on the addition, starting the masonry for the garden walls, and some interior framing work, namely the stairs. I think that the brick is the most labor-intensive part. When I went by on Friday, there were 6 guys there laying brick! The side walls of the addition are done. End of Week 1

The end of last week saw the removal of most of the wood paneling in the basement and the abatement of the asbestos floor tiles, also in the basement. I was told by the contractor to stay away, but I did sneak a couple of pictures without actually going in the basement. Punchlist Day 1 - First Floor is almost done!

Today was an exciting day - I went over in the morning to start doing the final punchlist/inspection of the house. Really only the first floor was ready, so that's mainly what I focused on. They were finishing up more today and tomorrow and so I will go over on the weekend to do the rest. I was so excited to share, that I commandeered the beginning of our work monthly management meeting this morning to share photos. Everyone at work has been following this project, so they were all excited to see it. I wanted to share with all of you, too!!! The living room floors are refinished, walls are smooth, and we have beautiful new baseboards! (they aren't that yucky brown anymore!!) The living room looking the other way.
